Overview
In the Kolkata metropolitan region of West Bengal, India, there is a four- and six-lane trunk road known as Barrackpore Trunk Road, or BT Road. It links Barrackpore, a suburb of Kolkata, to the city. One of the busiest highways in the nation and the oldest metalled road, having been constructed in 1775. The 18.1 kilometers (11.2 miles) long route is a component of State Highways 1 and 2.
The Indian Statistical Institute and Rabindra Bharati University are just two of the several institutions and other monuments that can be found along BT Road. Originally, the regions beside the road were industrial zones, but as residential areas spread out, they eventually took the place of the industries. Also, the 160-year-old water supply pipeline for the city buries beneath the highway.
